Taiwan-US Cooperation Strengthened by Bipartisan US Support

Date:

Taiwan expresses gratitude as Taiwan-US cooperation gains strong bipartisan support in the US Congress. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung publicly thanked lawmakers for advancing security partnerships. The US House of Representatives approved the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in September, allocating up to US$1 billion for Taiwan’s defense needs. Meanwhile, the Senate recently passed its version of the NDAA, further endorsing military aid and collaborative defense efforts.

The legislation plays a crucial role in deepening Taiwan-US cooperation amid rising regional tensions. It authorizes significant security assistance for Taiwan, including a defense technology partnership with the Pentagon. The bill also calls for Taiwan’s inclusion in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercises. Additionally, it promotes joint development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), highlighting the focus on advanced defense technologies.

Foreign Minister Lin emphasized that continued bipartisan support from both chambers of Congress underscores a firm US commitment to Taiwan’s security. He referenced President Lai Ching-te’s recent National Day speech, in which the president pledged to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities to maintain “peace through strength.” This commitment aligns closely with the goals outlined in the NDAA.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will keep a close watch on the bill’s progress. It aims to maintain strong communication with the US Congress and the current administration to further solidify Taiwan-US cooperation. The ministry stressed that such cooperation enhances Taiwan’s ability to respond to security challenges in the region.

Experts note that this bipartisan legislative support signals a clear message of deterrence to potential threats. The US’s willingness to provide substantial military aid and foster joint defense initiatives strengthens Taiwan’s strategic position. Analysts expect this partnership to encourage further cooperation on emerging defense technologies.

Looking ahead, Taiwan and the US plan to continue expanding their collaboration on security matters. Both sides appear determined to pursue shared goals amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. The bipartisan support in Congress marks a significant milestone in Taiwan-US cooperation, promising sustained defense collaboration in the years to come.
