Taiwanese actors Lee Kang-sheng and Yang Kuei-mei were honored with Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the 18th Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong.
Lee Kang-sheng Wins Best Supporting Actor
Lee Kang-sheng earned the Best Supporting Actor title for his role in the thriller-drama Stranger Eyes, a multinational production from Singapore, Taiwan, France, and the US. He triumphed over fellow nominees Ken Mitsuishi and Sosuke Ikematsu from Japan, Tommy Chu from Hong Kong, and Hong Kong-born American actor Philip Ng.
A veteran in the film industry, Lee previously won Best Actor at the 50th Golden Horse Awards in 2013 and the same honor at the 56th Asia-Pacific Film Festival that year.
Yang Kuei-mei Secures Best Supporting Actress
Yang Kuei-mei was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Taiwanese drama Yen and Ai-Lee. She edged out competitors Maggie Li from Hong Kong, Divya Prabha from India, Lim Ji-yeon from South Korea, and Kumi Takiuchi from Japan.
Both Lee and Yang are frequent collaborators of Malaysian-born Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang and have previously won Best Actor and Best Actress awards at the Golden Horse Awards.
Yang’s win follows her Best Supporting Actress victory at last year’s Golden Horse Awards for Yen and Ai-Lee, solidifying her reputation as one of Taiwan’s most accomplished actresses.
Recognition for Taiwanese Cinema
The 18th Asian Film Awards considered 30 films from 25 countries across 16 categories. In addition to the major acting awards, Taiwanese actor Wu Kang-ren received the Next Generation Award, recognizing his rising influence in Asian cinema.
The victories of Lee, Yang, and Wu highlight the continued excellence and global recognition of Taiwanese talent in the film industry.
