Tokyo Records First Midsummer Day of 2026 With 30.2C

Date:

Tokyo recorded its first midsummer day of 2026 on Sunday afternoon. The temperature reached 30.2 degrees Celsius shortly after 1:45 p.m. The Japan Meteorological Agency uses the term midsummer day when temperatures surpass 30 degrees. Consequently this marks the year’s first such reading in the capital.

Other parts of Japan saw even higher temperatures on Sunday. Akiota in Hiroshima Prefecture recorded 34 degrees. Meanwhile Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture reached 33.9 degrees. Therefore this midsummer day in Tokyo aligns with a broader heat pattern across western Japan. The agency advises residents to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity during peak hours.

Summer heat typically intensifies across Japan from late May through August. This temperature arrived earlier than average this year. Climate patterns suggest more hot days will follow in coming weeks. The agency will continue monitoring temperature trends nationwide. Residents should prepare for additional midsummer day conditions as the season progresses.
