TSMC Arizona Investment to Create 12,000 Semiconductor Jobs

Date:

TSMC continues to expand its global footprint with a massive TSMC Arizona investment. The company plans to build six semiconductor fabs in the state. According to TSMC Arizona President Rose Castanares, the total project will generate 12,000 direct jobs.

Initially, TSMC committed US$65 billion to build three fabs in Arizona. This move came with support from the U.S. Chips Act. The first fab, which produces 4 nm chips, began operations recently. It currently employs about 3,000 workers.

Castanares said the first three fabs will eventually support 6,000 jobs in total. The third fab broke ground and is scheduled to start production before the decade ends. These advanced facilities are part of TSMC’s plan to localize chip production in the U.S.

The Greater Phoenix Economic Council reported even broader job creation. The TSMC Arizona investment will also add over 20,000 construction jobs. In addition, tens of thousands of indirect jobs will support suppliers and related industries.

In a second phase, TSMC committed another US$100 billion to expand in Arizona. This includes three more fabs, two packaging plants, and an R&D center. This expansion will create another 6,000 jobs, bringing the total to 12,000.

By 2030, TSMC hopes to produce 2 nm chips in Arizona. This goal supports U.S. efforts to secure critical supply chains. It also reduces reliance on overseas semiconductor production, particularly in Taiwan.

Despite these ambitious goals, TSMC has faced challenges. Cultural clashes between Taiwanese and American employees have been reported. U.S. labor unions also criticized the company over safety concerns. TSMC denied the accusations and emphasized its commitment to safety.

The TSMC Arizona investment marks a major step in global chip manufacturing. It reflects growing demand, rising geopolitical concerns, and a strong push for domestic semiconductor production.
