UN Human Rights Visit to Mongolia Marks First in 26 Years

Date:

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk concluded a human rights visit to Mongolia on May 11. This official visit took place from May 10 to 11, marking the first such trip in 26 years. Consequently, this human rights visit recognizes Mongolia’s achievements in democracy, gender equality, and human rights. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) engages with governments worldwide. It also provides technical assistance to member states and promotes international cooperation.

During the human rights visit, Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh held a bilateral meeting with Türk. They discussed Mongolia’s adherence to international human rights treaties and their implementation. They also exchanged views on the current international situation and future cooperation. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a roadmap for a regional human rights research center. This agreement fulfills a pledge Mongolia made on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The UN human rights visit also secured OHCHR participation in COP17. Mongolia will host the 17th session of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification this August. OHCHR will send a delegation and co-organize a special event on climate change. This event will protect vulnerable groups, especially children and women affected by climate change.

High Commissioner Türk introduced his Global Alliance for Human Rights initiative during the meeting. This initiative aims to place human rights at the center of global decision-making. The rule of law and human rights face increasing pressure worldwide. Türk expressed interest in Mongolia’s support and participation in the alliance. Looking ahead, the OHCHR will continue its dialogue with Mongolia on regional research center plans. For now, the successful human rights visit opens new avenues for collaboration.
