Mongolia’s Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh visited Spain from April 28 to 30, 2025, at the invitation of José Manuel Albares, Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation. During the visit, she met with the Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Zurab Pololikashvili, at the organization’s headquarters in Madrid.
Foreign Minister Batmunkh discussed Mongolia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its tourism sector, which plays a vital role in the nation’s economy. She outlined the government’s tourism development objectives and highlighted initiatives under the “Years to Visit Mongolia” campaign. The minister also shared details of Mongolia’s efforts to promote the “Go Mongolia” National Brand globally.
The discussions focused on strengthening Mongolia’s international tourism presence. As part of the meeting, Minister Batmunkh invited Secretary-General Pololikashvili to visit Mongolia. Both sides agreed to facilitate further cooperation, including a meeting between the UNWTO Secretary-General and Mongolia’s Minister of Culture, Sports, Tourism, and Youth. They will discuss various cooperation opportunities and priorities in the tourism sector.
UNWTO has pledged to assist Mongolia by providing expertise and guidance to improve tourism infrastructure. The organization will also help attract investment to support the sector’s growth. Joint promotional activities will be organized to showcase Mongolia’s history, culture, and tourism potential at international conferences and forums.
A key initiative will be the 19th UN Tourism Asia-Pacific Executive Training Programme, scheduled to take place in Ulaanbaatar from May 19-22, 2025. More than 20 representatives from the Asia-Pacific region will attend. The program will focus on promoting sustainable tourism, sharing best practices, and aligning Mongolia’s tourism strategies with global standards.
The upcoming visit by the UNWTO Secretary-General to Mongolia promises to strengthen ties and foster collaboration between the two parties in the tourism sector.
