North Korea Launches Pyongyang Car Exhibition While Secretly Investigating Buyers

Date:

North Korean authorities launched a large-scale car exhibition in Pyongyang in June 2026 while quietly ordering financial surveillance of potential buyers. Sources confirmed a mid-June directive instructed the Ministry of Social Security to cooperate fully with the event. Furthermore, two trade companies, one under the Cabinet and one under the National Intelligence Agency, organized the showcase jointly. Consequently, the exhibition reveals a calculated state strategy to capture foreign currency from North Korea’s wealthy donju class.

The car exhibition runs from June 19 to June 28 at a showroom in Hwasong district, Pyongyang. Display vehicles include the Chinese Zeekr 7X electric vehicle alongside various luxury used cars sourced from abroad. Additionally, authorities are accepting pre-orders throughout the event, with actual sales scheduled to begin in July. Trade companies linked to the National Intelligence Agency have already transported vehicles across the border for showroom assembly.

Sources describe the event as functioning more as a presale promotion than a conventional car show. Indeed, officials appear intent on absorbing foreign currency held by senior officials and donju entrepreneurs specifically. Moreover, authorities aim to bring North Korea’s previously informal vehicle distribution market under direct state control. Therefore, the exhibition serves dual purposes of revenue generation and market regulation simultaneously.

Security officers received instructions to reinforce showroom guard presence and quietly investigate buyers’ fund sources. Many donju who accumulated wealth through informal or illicit channels are reportedly proceeding cautiously as a result. Additionally, some assigned security officers have grumbled about serving essentially as doormen for a state money-making operation. Nevertheless, others reportedly hope to benefit personally through under-the-table payments connected to their monitoring duties.

Looking ahead, sources expect rapid vehicle market expansion beginning in July, including new parts and repair centers. However, ordinary North Koreans view the high-priced exhibition as entirely inaccessible given typical household financial circumstances. Consequently, the car exhibition is deepening feelings of social alienation among citizens who cannot participate in this emerging luxury market.
