Village Store Library Brings Hope and Transformation to Henan Community

Date:

When Li Cuili first decided to open a small library inside her convenience store in Lishi village, Henan province, in 2008, villagers thought her idea was strange. At the time, everyone else was busy making ends meet, while Li dreamed of something greater: transforming her community through the power of books.

Initially inspired by concern for her own child, Li was unsettled after seeing a village performance she deemed unsuitable for children. Determined to create a more wholesome environment, Li began offering free books in her shop, believing deeply that reading could positively shape lives.

At first, few villagers showed interest. Despite making the books freely available, her modest library, which she named “Weiguang” meaning “dim light,” had only about 200 books and attracted little attention. Determined, Li decided to focus on engaging local children by offering small treats like candy for reading and writing book reviews.

Gradually, the library became popular among the village children, who spent less time playing on the streets and more time immersed in books. Parents soon noticed positive changes in their children’s behavior and began to support Li’s efforts. More villagers joined as regular visitors and volunteers, transforming Weiguang Library into a vibrant village cultural hub, which today houses around 5,000–6,000 books.

Li’s determination and dedication to literacy have earned her recognition beyond her village. Now 45 years old, she serves as a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress and as president of the Lishi village women’s federation.

Reflecting on her journey, Li said, “I named it Weiguang because initially it was just a small, humble effort—like a faint light. But even a faint light can ignite a lasting fire.”
