Bear Attacks Rise in Selenge Aimag as Spring Emergence Brings Conflicts

Date:

A bear attacked a household’s cow and destroyed a beehive on April 26 in Gangat, the second bagh of Tsagaannuur soum in Selenge aimag. Local residents report that bear attacks rise each spring as the animals emerge from hibernation. Consequently, incidents of bears approaching settlements and damaging livestock are increasing noticeably. This trend creates a real risk for herders living near forested areas. Officials warn that bears become more active in their search for food during spring.

Similar cases have occurred in Selenge aimag during previous years. For instance, a bear killed a herder’s cow in Yeruu soum in 2025. Additionally, two cattle were reportedly eaten within a short period earlier in 2026 in the same area. Furthermore, bears had entered livestock enclosures in Sant soum during past years. There, they attacked sheep and goats kept by local herders. Thus, bear attacks rise across multiple districts of the aimag.

Relevant authorities have advised herders to keep livestock under close supervision. They also urged residents to strengthen nighttime protection measures for their animals. Moreover, beekeepers should take additional steps to secure their hives. Officials emphasize that vigilance remains critical in forest and steppe regions. Because bear attacks rise with the onset of warmer weather, preventive action is essential.

The recent incident in Gangat involved both livestock loss and property damage. The bear killed the cow and also destroyed a beehive nearby. Local herders expressed concern about the growing frequency of such events. Wildlife experts note that bears venture closer to human settlements when natural food sources are scarce. Therefore, bear attacks rise as a direct result of habitat pressure and seasonal hunger.

Authorities continue monitoring bear activity across Selenge aimag. They recommend that herders avoid leaving livestock unattended at night. Electric fencing and guard animals may also reduce risks. As spring progresses, residents should report bear sightings promptly. If bear attacks rise further, officials may consider additional mitigation measures such as relocation or deterrents. For now, public awareness and livestock protection remain the primary strategies.
