Japan-US Solidarity Strengthens Ahead of US-China Summit

Date:

Japan-US solidarity drives high-level talks in Tokyo as officials seek to reinforce ties before the upcoming US-China summit. Japanese leaders held multiple meetings with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during his visit. They emphasized shared concerns over supply chains and regional stability.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met Bessent at the Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday. She highlighted the need for Japan-US cooperation against economic coercion. Bessent later told reporters that the partnership between the two nations remains very strong. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa, and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi also held separate discussions with him.

Moreover, these engagements serve a clear strategic purpose. Japanese officials aim to caution President Donald Trump against aligning too closely with Chinese positions on sensitive issues. Transitioning from recent tensions, Japan remains wary after deteriorating relations with China. Trump’s first visit to China since 2017 adds urgency to these efforts. In addition, a November phone call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping raised alarms in Tokyo after criticism of Japanese remarks on Taiwan.

Japan-US solidarity also addresses broader alliance goals. Officials shared perspectives on Taiwan policy and supply chain resilience with Bessent, a key figure in US-China negotiations and a Trump confidant. Furthermore, the former hedge fund manager possesses deep Japan expertise and previously profited significantly from yen trades. A government source noted that messages conveyed to him will reach Trump directly.

However, challenges persist because Trump’s approach remains unpredictable. With midterm elections approaching, he might prioritize economic deals and adopt a conciliatory stance toward China. Consequently, Japan fears potential concessions like pauses in arms sales to Taiwan. Such moves could isolate Japan and embolden efforts to divide allies.

Following the summit, Tokyo plans to request immediate briefings from Washington. Leaders intend to incorporate those details into future diplomacy with Beijing. Overall, these actions underscore Japan’s proactive steps to maintain unified positions.
