Taiwan Semiconductors Remain Critical for Global AI Leadership

Date:

Taiwan Semiconductors remain vital for global AI progress despite ongoing supply chain shifts, experts warned yesterday. Former White House official David Feith spoke at a major forum in Taipei. He emphasized that Taiwan and the United States must prioritize long-term strategy over short-term issues. Moreover, both sides need to strengthen deterrence to protect essential technology networks. Feith now serves as a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute.

Taiwan produces advanced chips that underpin worldwide AI systems. Therefore, full relocation of these capabilities will take many years. TSMC operates new facilities in Arizona but still sends wafers back to Taiwan for critical advanced packaging. In addition, overly optimistic views of onshoring ignore these deep dependencies. Feith identified two key risks in his remarks. Slow supply chain diversification exposes the United States to disruption. Meanwhile, underinvestment in asymmetric defense weakens Taiwan’s security. Furthermore, Taiwan must raise defense spending to better match its economic power and threat environment.

Chris Miller, author of Chip War, also addressed the forum. He urged greater international recognition for Taiwan and rejected claims that it stole the chip industry. Accurate language helps identify China as the real source of risk. Experts note that Beijing’s ambitions make supply chain resilience urgent. Consequently, diversification should expand beyond advanced nodes to include packaging and mature chips. This step reduces vulnerability to potential economic coercion.

Taiwan Semiconductors continue to drive innovation and require robust protection. Leaders should accelerate cooperation to safeguard technological leadership. Taiwan Semiconductors thus shape future AI dominance and Indo-Pacific stability.
