Shanxi Mine Gas Explosion Kills 82, Three Officials Under Investigation

Date:

Authorities have placed three emergency management officials under disciplinary investigation after a gas explosion killed 82 people at a coal mine in Qinyuan county, Changzhi, on May 22. The Changzhi discipline inspection authority issued a notice on Sunday identifying the officials. Sun Xiaoye, Party secretary and director of the county’s emergency management bureau, faces the probe. Additionally, the notice named Yue Xiaodong, a Party committee member and deputy head, and Zhang Qian, head of the first law enforcement brigade.

Furthermore, the notice said the three officials face suspected serious violations of Party discipline and law. Separately, disciplinary inspection authorities in Shangdang District, Qinxian County, and Huguan County are each conducting their own reviews. Meanwhile, the gas explosion occurred at 7:29 p.m. at the Liushenyu Coal Mine, operated by Shanxi Tongzhou Group. As of now, the accident has left 82 people dead and two missing. Moreover, 128 others suffered injuries in the blast.

The cause of the gas explosion remains under investigation. However, the high death toll has already triggered calls for stricter mine safety enforcement. In response, the central government has pledged to hold negligent officials accountable. Consequently, the investigation of the three emergency management officials marks the start of a broader accountability push. Local authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the violations. Nevertheless, the case highlights persistent safety lapses in the country’s coal mining sector.

The Liushenyu mine has been a major producer in the region for years. Yet, like many underground operations, it carries the ever-present risk of methane buildup. The latest gas explosion underscores the need for continuous monitoring and rapid emergency response. As a result, regulators will likely intensify inspections across Shanxi’s mining belt. For now, the families of the victims are demanding answers and accountability. The three officials remain under investigation as the full scope of the disaster becomes clear.
