China Expands Visa-Free Travel for GCC Nationals

Date:

China’s visa-free travel policy has now extended to include all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, thereby marking a major diplomatic step. On Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed the update during a press briefing. She stated that citizens of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain can enter China without a visa from June 9, 2025. Previously, similar agreements were made with the UAE and Qatar in 2018. Consequently, China now offers visa-free access to all six GCC members.

Under the new arrangement, eligible passport holders can stay in China for up to 30 days. They may travel for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, or transit without prior visa applications. Mao highlighted that the policy will run for one year, ending on June 8, 2026. In line with this, the initiative aims to encourage spontaneous travel and deepen people-to-people connections. She invited travellers from the region to explore China more freely.

China’s visa-free travel policy reflects its broader efforts to enhance regional cooperation with the GCC. Notably, the announcement came during the ASEAN-China-GCC Summit, underlining its geopolitical importance. As China strengthens diplomatic and economic links with Gulf states, easier mobility plays a central role. Indeed, facilitating travel boosts tourism, cultural exchange, and business collaboration. Ultimately, the policy signals a strategic pivot towards closer China-Gulf engagement.

Tourism operators across the GCC have welcomed the decision, expecting a rise in outbound travel to China. At the same time, business communities also see the policy as a way to simplify deals and speed up cross-border projects. Moreover, families with ties in both regions can now visit without lengthy visa procedures. In the past, restrictive travel requirements delayed or deterred many would-be visitors. Now, China’s visa-free travel policy removes a major barrier for millions.

Going forward, China may use similar travel agreements to strengthen ties with other regions. In this regard, officials hope increased Gulf travel to China will support economic diversification and soft diplomacy. As more travellers arrive, industries such as hospitality, retail, and aviation will likely benefit. Therefore, China’s visa-free travel policy could mark the beginning of deeper, people-driven international relationships. For now, it opens a new chapter in China-GCC cooperation built on easier access and mutual trust.
