Taiwan Rhinoceros Beetle Season Begins at Wushanding Reserve

Date:

The rhinoceros beetle season has officially started at Taiwan’s Wushanding Mud Volcano Nature Reserve in Kaohsiung. The Kaohsiung City Government’s Agriculture Bureau announced this seasonal event, highlighting its environmental significance. Every year from May through August, Japanese rhinoceros beetles emerge in large numbers. At this time, they cluster on Himalayan ash trees, feeding on the resin. This seasonal activity draws nature lovers and ecologists alike. Notably, the rhinoceros beetle season plays a vital role in Taiwan’s ecosystem. As larvae, the beetles live underground and help decompose organic matter. As adults, they feed above ground and support tree health by aiding in natural processes.

Agriculture Bureau Director Yao Chih-wang called on visitors to avoid disturbing the beetles. He urged the public to protect the area’s rare badlands terrain and respect the reserve’s biodiversity. Taiwan’s Wushanding Mud Volcano Reserve is internationally recognized for its geological uniqueness. It features three cone-shaped mud volcanoes. The tallest reaches about 3.5 meters, with slopes that can reach a 50% incline. These volcanoes erupt regularly, spewing thick mud and releasing natural gas. The mud flows can travel as far as 70 meters. Additionally, the gas released during eruptions is flammable, adding another layer of interest and caution for visitors.

The badlands terrain stretches across Kaohsiung’s Neimen, Tianliao, and Yanchao districts. This landscape not only supports the rhinoceros beetles but also many native plants and animals. During the rhinoceros beetle season, wildlife watchers have a rare chance to observe the beetles up close. However, authorities stress the importance of preserving this delicate ecosystem. Visitors should watch without interfering and avoid walking off designated paths. In summary, Taiwan’s rhinoceros beetle season at Wushanding Reserve highlights the island’s rich biodiversity. As beetles take center stage and mud volcanoes continue their dramatic eruptions, the area offers an extraordinary experience—one that deserves both appreciation and protection.
