South Korea Aerospace Industries Partners with Shield AI to Develop Advanced AI Pilot Capabilities

Date:

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), South Korea’s leading aircraft systems integrator, has entered into a strategic partnership with Shield AI, a U.S.-based company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems for defense purposes. The collaboration aims to integrate advanced AI pilot technologies into KAI’s manned-unmanned teaming platforms.

Under this partnership, KAI will utilize Shield AI’s flagship autonomy software suite, Hivemind Enterprise (HME), to accelerate the development of its proprietary AI pilot system, named “K-AILOT.” K-AILOT will initially be integrated into a scaled version of KAI’s multipurpose Autonomous Aerial Platform (AAP), enhancing its autonomous flight capabilities.

Shield AI’s Chief Technology Officer, Nathan Michael, highlighted that Hivemind Enterprise aims to significantly simplify and reduce costs associated with developing autonomy for defense platforms. HME is designed as a scalable, modular AI platform that enables rapid creation, evaluation, and deployment of autonomous behaviors at scale. This includes essential functions such as navigation, obstacle avoidance, and target recognition, even in GPS- and communications-denied environments.

Hivemind Enterprise has already been successfully integrated into various U.S. defense platforms, including the F-16 (X-62 VISTA), GA-ASI MQ-20 Avenger, Kratos MQM-178 Firejet, V-BAT drones, and quadcopters. The software is structured into three main components: Hivemind Edge, Hivemind Design, and Hivemind Commander.

  • Hivemind Edge is deployed directly onboard unmanned vehicles, enabling real-time autonomy through perception, action, and decision-making capabilities. Its open, modular architecture allows compatibility with a wide range of aircraft platforms.
  • Hivemind Design provides a comprehensive toolset allowing developers to design, configure, test, and refine AI pilot capabilities within cloud-based or local computing environments.
  • Hivemind Commander facilitates human interaction with autonomous systems through intuitive mission planning interfaces, real-time command and control capabilities, and extensive simulation-based operator training and testing environments.

The partnership also involves Quantum Aero, Shield AI’s exclusive supplier in South Korea, which joined the signing of the cooperation agreement. This collaboration positions KAI to significantly advance its unmanned aviation capabilities, potentially enhancing South Korea’s competitive edge in next-generation autonomous aerospace systems.
