India and Mongolia Strengthen Strategic Partnership Ahead of 70th Anniversary of Diplomatic Ties

Date:

India and Mongolia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership during a recent high-level meeting, setting the stage for expanded cooperation and commemorative events marking the upcoming 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

India’s Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar and Munkhtushig Lkhanaajav, Mongolia’s State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met to review the bilateral relationship. The officials discussed enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including development partnerships, education, information technology, energy, connectivity, culture, capacity building, mining, defence, and security.

Both sides agreed to maintain the momentum of high-level engagements and decided to upgrade the existing Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) to the Secretary level. A series of commemorative activities to celebrate seven decades of diplomatic relations were also planned.

India and Mongolia have a long history of cultural interaction spanning over 2,000 years. India was notably the first country outside the Socialist bloc to establish diplomatic ties with Mongolia on December 24, 1955, and supported Mongolia’s membership in the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement.

In 2015, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mongolia, the two nations elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, further solidifying their shared historical bonds and mutual interests.

The meeting also saw exchanges of views on regional and international issues of common interest, highlighting a mutual desire for closer coordination and dialogue on global platforms.
