Ulaanbaatar Expands Renewable Energy Project to Reduce Air Pollution in Ger Areas

Date:

Ulaanbaatar authorities are stepping up efforts to combat air pollution by expanding renewable energy projects targeting households in the city’s ger areas. Initiatives include establishing green zones, reducing solid fuel usage, and promoting the use of renewable energy and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

In collaboration with international partners, the Capital City recently completed a pilot project converting the heating and electricity sources of six households in the 31st and 43rd khoroos of Songinokhairkhan district to renewable energy. Following its success, officials are now extending this initiative under the “If Only I Could Go Solar: From Coal to Solar” project to several additional khoroos.

Participating households will shift from traditional stoves and solid fuel to renewable energy solutions complemented by improved insulation. The project is specifically designed to assist households outside areas designated for redevelopment and land clearance.

Governor of Songinokhairkhan district, Battur Tsedendamba, emphasized the importance of local cooperation, stating, “In green zones, we’re introducing LPG, electricity, and renewable energy. Elsewhere, our aim is to significantly reduce solid fuel consumption by encouraging renewable energy adoption. Khoroos must actively submit data on eligible households for successful implementation.”

Additionally, Tolgoit and Bayankhoshuu subcenters within Songinokhairkhan district are currently being developed into apartment complexes, further supporting Ulaanbaatar’s goal of reducing household reliance on coal, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and improving air quality for residents.
