The Bluefin Tuna Festival in Pingtung is making a strong return this year. Organizers announced the festival will run from May 3 through July 6. Visitors can expect concerts, seafood feasts, fireworks, and cultural experiences.
Pingtung County is preparing for a packed schedule. The event kicks off with a high-energy concert featuring live performances. This marks the official start of the two-month-long celebration.
For the first time, the festival expands to Xiaoliuqiu Island. On May 17, visitors can enjoy a special concert followed by a fireworks display. This new addition aims to bring more visitors to the island and boost its tourism.
The Bluefin Tuna Festival in Pingtung highlights the region’s famous seafood. On June 7, chefs will serve a ten-course banquet at the Donglong Temple plaza. Dishes will include fresh bluefin tuna, sakura shrimp, and oilfish. The feast offers 100 tables, with each table priced at NT$5,980. Guests can register for seats starting May 7.
Seafood fans can also shop at a large tuna market on June 14 and 15. Over 100 vendors will sell local snacks, gifts, and fresh seafood. The market will be held at the Pen Bay International Leisure Zone.
To create a lively vibe, the market will feature live music and themed photo areas. These elements are designed to appeal to families, tourists, and social media users.
Every Friday and weekend, festival-goers can cool down with tuna-shaped popsicles. Vendors will sell them at Donggang Fishing Harbor. Organizers will also offer limited-edition, eco-friendly shopping bags with tuna-themed designs.
Recently, local fishers caught a massive bluefin tuna weighing 225 kilograms. The fish sold for NT$2.3 million, showing how valuable the catch can be. According to officials, 60% to 70% of Taiwan’s annual bluefin tuna haul comes from Donggang Township.
Last year, the area landed 6,548 tuna, the highest number in 22 years. This record shows the region’s importance in Taiwan’s fishing industry.
