China Highlights Strong Ties with ASEAN for Regional Stability

Date:

China has emphasized the importance of its relationship with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian praised this partnership, calling it one of the most dynamic and fruitful examples of cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. At a regular news briefing on Tuesday, he reaffirmed China’s dedication to the principles of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness. Lin stressed that these principles bring greater benefits to people across Asia and contribute to global stability. He also expressed hope that this collaboration would help build a community with a shared future in Asia.

His remarks came after a recent article by the Valdai International Discussion Club, a Russian think tank. The article highlighted the growing influence of China and ASEAN in East Asia and beyond. It noted that their relationship is significant not just for Asia but for the entire international community. Lin echoed this sentiment, pointing out that China and ASEAN have forged a “firm, steady, and vibrant” cooperation path since establishing dialogue relations over 30 years ago.

Over the past five years, China and ASEAN have been each other’s largest trading partner. In 2024, their bilateral trade reached an impressive 6.99 trillion yuan (around $953 billion). The growth in trade is a reflection of the strength of China-ASEAN relations. The China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, the first of its kind for both sides, plays a key role in this partnership. Last year, the two sides agreed to accelerate work on the 3.0 Free Trade Area upgrade protocol. They aim to complete the legal reviews and domestic procedures needed for its signing in 2025.

Lin described the China-ASEAN relationship as a model for China’s long-standing principles. He emphasized that the cooperation is based on mutual trust and integration of interests, highlighting China’s commitment to fostering good-neighborly relations. According to Lin, political trust between China and ASEAN has continued to deepen, creating a foundation for even greater cooperation in the future.

China has also pursued closer ties with its other neighbors. Lin noted that China has reached consensus on building a community with a shared future with 17 neighboring countries. Additionally, China has signed Belt and Road cooperation agreements with 25 neighboring countries. He pointed out that China is the largest trading partner of 18 countries in its neighborhood. These efforts reflect China’s strategy of regional engagement and economic collaboration.

Several major infrastructure projects highlight the tangible benefits of this regional cooperation. Lin cited the China-Laos Railway and Vietnam’s Hanoi Metro Line 2 as flagship Belt and Road initiatives. These projects not only promote economic growth but also improve connectivity within the region. He also mentioned that digital empowerment and green development are emerging areas of collaboration, signaling a shift towards more sustainable and modern forms of cooperation.

Regional cooperation mechanisms have been crucial in fostering these developments. Lin pointed to initiatives such as East Asia cooperation, Lancang-Mekong cooperation, China-Central Asia cooperation, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. These mechanisms have played a vital role in advancing regional economic integration. By participating in these initiatives, China has helped to strengthen ties across Asia and enhance regional stability.

Lin emphasized China’s commitment to being a good neighbor and a reliable partner in Asia. He reiterated that China would continue to act with sincerity, pursue mutual benefit, and uphold openness and inclusiveness in its relationships. China remains deeply rooted in the region and is determined to contribute to the region’s development. As the partnership between China and ASEAN grows, it will play a critical role in ensuring the stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region.
