Exhibition Celebrates Zhou Lingzhao, Architect of New China’s Visual Identity

Date:

Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) is hosting a commemorative exhibition of works by the late artist Zhou Lingzhao (1919–2023). Zhou was a skilled painter, designer, and longtime professor at CAFA. The exhibition highlights how he helped shape the visual identity of modern China.

Zhou’s career is closely aligned with pivotal moments in Chinese history. For example, he painted a portrait of Mao Zedong displayed on the Tian’anmen rostrum during the founding ceremony of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949. This portrait became an iconic image of the new nation. It helped define China’s public image both at home and abroad. In addition, Zhou contributed to many national ceremonies, public artworks, and commemorative designs that communicated the ideals and spirit of the era.

The exhibition, Painted in the Depths of Time, traces Zhou’s artistic journey from his early years to his decades at CAFA. It shows how the social and political changes of the 20th century influenced his work. Moreover, it illustrates how Zhou’s choices as an artist helped build China’s visual identity. The display includes sketches, finished paintings, design manuscripts, and other works that reveal his creative process. Visitors can see how he blended traditional techniques with modern approaches. This combination allowed him to meet the needs of a rapidly changing society.

In addition, the exhibition highlights the dialogue between personal expression and national purpose. Zhou’s art demonstrates how one individual’s vision can respond to broader historical forces. For instance, when creating images for public spaces or national campaigns, he balanced artistic creativity with civic responsibility. His works reflect both technical skill and a deep understanding of historical and cultural contexts.

The exhibition also shows the lasting impact of Zhou’s teaching. Many of his students have become prominent artists. They carry forward his philosophy that art should serve both society and personal expression. By showcasing his career, the exhibition allows audiences to appreciate how art and history intertwine.

Painted in the Depths of Time runs through March 1 at the CAFA Art Museum. It offers a rare chance to explore Zhou Lingzhao’s legacy. Visitors can understand the historical significance of his work and see how art influences a nation’s visual and cultural identity.
