Mongolia Seeks English Education Boost With Remaining UK Funding for Teacher Training

Date:

English education boost took center stage during a meeting between Minister of Education Enkh-Amgalan Luvsantseren and UK Ambassador Fiona Blyth. The two officials exchanged views on bilateral cooperation progress in Mongolia’s educational sector. The minister highlighted results from a project strengthening English language teachers in remote areas. This project launched following his 2024 meeting with former UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

The minister recalled the UK’s pledged GBP 10 million in funding to support English language education. He requested that the remaining funding be reiterated during an upcoming visit scheduled for May. To date, Mongolia has received GBP 1.1 million from the original commitment. The project has used these funds to strengthen the capacity of 739 teachers. It has been implemented in eight remote aimags across the country. The project involved 739 teachers from 219 general education schools.

The initiative specifically targets remote areas that traditionally lack educational resources. Teachers in these regions often face challenges accessing professional development opportunities. The project provides training that helps them improve their teaching methods.

The meeting also addressed future cooperation between the two countries. The minister conveyed his interest in meeting with Seema Malhotra, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Indo-Pacific at the UK Foreign Office. Ambassador Blyth acknowledged the project’s success during the meeting. She expressed the UK’s continued commitment to supporting Mongolia’s education goals. The upcoming May visit will determine the timeline for releasing these funds. Both sides expressed optimism about deepening their educational partnership.
