Han Dong-hoon, the former chair of the ruling People Power Party, officially launched his candidacy for the 2027 South Korean presidential election on Thursday. His announcement comes as presidential race pressure mounts in the country. Han positioned himself as the candidate most capable of defeating opposition leader Rep. Lee Jae-myung.
During a press conference at the National Assembly in Seoul, Han confidently stated, “Who can defeat Lee Jae-myung? Who does he fear the most?” He added, “We must choose someone who can win. I will achieve a decisive victory, together with the people.”
Han proposed significant reforms to the country’s political system. Specifically, he called for a shift to a four-year, renewable presidency and suggested creating a bicameral legislature. He also recommended abolishing proportional representation seats while keeping the total number of lawmakers at 300. To reduce political tension, Han proposed synchronizing the terms of the president and the National Assembly by holding the presidential and general elections at the same time. “That’s the only way to end the cycle of extreme political strife,” he said.
Furthermore, Han stressed that the next president should not run for re-election. “All candidates must demonstrate responsibility and a willingness to sacrifice,” he insisted.
Han’s entry into the race adds to the increasing presidential race pressure within the People Power Party. Han, who served as justice minister under President Yoon Suk Yeol, entered politics as the party’s leader in December 2023. However, he became a prominent figure in the non-Yoon faction, reportedly clashing with Yoon over candidate nominations. After Yoon’s impeachment, Han stepped down as party chair.
Now, Han joins a growing group of contenders. On Wednesday, former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo and Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo both announced their candidacies. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon is expected to declare his bid this weekend. Meanwhile, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo and former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min are also preparing to announce their campaigns.
The People Power Party will select its candidate through a two-stage primary. The first round will determine the top four candidates based on public opinion polls. In the second round, the field will narrow to two finalists, with 50% of the decision based on polling and the other 50% on votes from registered party members. The final nominee will be announced on May 3.
With the presidential race pressure continuing to rise, Han faces a crowded field of contenders as the race heats up.
