Niel, formerly a member of Teen Top, has taken a bold step in Niel’s artistic journey by releasing his first official mini album under his own label. This new project signals his evolution as a solo artist with full creative control for the first time.
During an interview in Seoul, Niel shared that he finally felt free to make music that reflected his emotions. “There were always creative limits before,” he said. “But this time, I focused on expressing my feelings.” With this release, Niel’s artistic journey moves toward deeper, moodier sounds that feel more authentic to him.
Debuting with Teen Top in 2010, Niel gained early fame through popular tracks like “Miss Right” and “To You.” Over time, he ventured into solo work with songs such as “Hweek” and “A Walk to Goodbye,” offering a more personal musical style. Still, he felt the need for greater independence to explore his creative instincts.
In his latest album, he leaned into atmospheric and minor tones, something he has always been drawn to. “I know it’s not the mainstream,” Niel admitted. “But I wanted to explore subtle and emotional sounds that feel a bit different.”
The title track “SHE” features a haunting music video that visualizes emotional entrapment. Niel described the video’s use of string imagery as a symbol of being stuck in a mental loop. “I picked this song the moment I heard it,” he said. “I worked with the composer to shape it into something that felt like me.”
Though originally planned as a single, the project expanded into a full mini album. Niel explained that the creative process kept growing as he wanted every track to feel complete. Fans might especially enjoy “What’s the Excuse for Love?” — a nostalgic, band-driven track perfect for evening drives.
Still, Niel chose “SHE” as the title because it challenged him the most. “This song pushed me outside my comfort zone,” he said. “It’s unlike anything I’ve done before.” He messaged fans ahead of the release, telling them not to expect too much. “But deep down, I felt confident,” he added.
As part of Niel’s artistic journey, he’s also working on a new music-themed YouTube show and continuing his work in musical theater. These projects feed into one another, offering new inspiration. “I want to challenge myself in every genre,” he said. “I don’t want limits.”
Looking ahead, Niel plans to connect with international fans. He mentioned plans for events in Taiwan, Japan, and Europe, along with something special for his birthday. He also hinted at a possible Teen Top reunion after member Changjo finishes military service.
Niel’s artistic journey has grown with sincerity, boldness, and personal expression. “I’m grateful to those who waited and believed in me,” he said. “I’ll keep working so people can say, ‘I’m proud to be Niel’s fan.’”
Niel’s new mini album “SHE” drops Tuesday at 6 p.m. on major streaming platforms.
