Ningbo Introduces Marriage Vouchers to Support Newlyweds

Date:

Ningbo’s civil affairs department has launched a marriage vouchers program for newlyweds in the city. The initiative runs from October 28 to December 31. Each couple can receive a total of 1,000 yuan in vouchers, divided into eight pieces worth 125 yuan each for every 500 yuan spent. The vouchers are limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participating businesses cover wedding photography, ceremonies, leisure travel, catering, retail, and cultural products. Couples can use the vouchers to reduce costs while supporting local industries. Other cities in Zhejiang, including Hangzhou, Keqiao in Shaoxing, and Pujiang in Jinhua, have introduced similar programs.

In Lüliang city, couples with brides aged 35 or younger can receive a 1,500-yuan cash reward. Some villages in Guangdong have also implemented similar incentives. Observers note that while the vouchers cover only part of wedding costs, they help stimulate marriage and local consumer spending.

Experts describe this trend as part of China’s “sweet economy,” boosting sales of wedding pastries, candies, and bridal favors. The program also aligns with China’s updated marriage registration policy, which allows couples to register nationwide regardless of household registration location.

Authorities emphasize that combining marriage vouchers with childcare subsidies strengthens incentives for marriage and childbearing. City officials plan to monitor voucher uptake and assess the impact on local businesses. They believe the program supports couples while stimulating wedding-related economic activity.

Overall, the marriage vouchers program represents a practical, targeted approach to encourage marriage and boost the wedding economy. The initiative highlights government efforts to create a more family-friendly society.
