Egiin Gol Hydropower Project Gains Momentum

Date:

Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai visited the Egiin Gol Hydropower Project site in Bulgan province on April 29, 2025. The site is located in Khutag-Undur soum, where local officials welcomed him.

The Egiin Gol Hydropower Project ranks fifth among Mongolia’s top 14 mega projects. This project aims to reduce energy imports and meet the rising power demands of the Central Region. It plays a key role in the country’s energy independence strategy.

International experts have assessed the project’s potential environmental risks. The World Heritage Committee and the International Union for Conservation of Nature shared their conclusions. They stated that the project’s one-sided implementation would not significantly harm the Selenge River or Lake Baikal ecosystems.

However, the same organizations advised Mongolia to follow global guidelines. They urged the government to prepare an environmental and social impact assessment using UNESCO standards. Mongolia has accepted this recommendation and committed to in-depth studies before construction begins.

From 2025 to 2026, multiple evaluations will take place. These include ecosystem change assessments, feasibility studies, and the development of an auxiliary port. Mongolia and Russia’s joint expert group will review the findings. Their final report is expected in the first half of 2026.

During the visit, Oyun-Erdene emphasized the importance of balancing energy needs with environmental protection. He called for transparency and collaboration throughout the planning stages of the Egiin Gol Hydropower Project.

In addition, he reviewed a separate development proposal in the area. He studied the draft master plan for the “Khantai” Natural Tourism Complex. This project seeks to boost local economic activity through sustainable tourism.

The government aims to move forward while protecting nature and involving stakeholders. With clear steps and timelines, the Egiin Gol Hydropower Project is entering a new and decisive phase.
